Get rid of these unruly streetkids

-

EDITOR — I would like to pass my deepest condolences to the family of the man who suffered a brutal attack by touts that led to his sudden death at the undesignated Mutare rank near Roadport in Harare.

The tragic incident came a week after I wrote an editorial letter entitled “Inner city crime worrying.”

My objective was to raise awareness both of members of the public and the ZRP regarding the way daylight crime is increasing at various dangerous spots in most of Harare’s central business district, Bulawayo and most towns and cities.

When ZBC announced the touching incident they alleged that touts were the main culprits.

Another emerging problem is that of streetkids who, in conjunction with street families, have turned out to be deadly thieves at various spots in the CBDs of most major towns.

Street families walk in gangs as their population is on the raise. They used to earn a living through begging on the street, but in a recent time it seems begging is inadequate for them and they now resort to robbery activities.

Members of the public can no longer afford to give them money due to current economic constraints.

One can hardly tell the streetkids of today as the majority of them dress like any ordinary person in the city.

Life in the city is slowly becoming unbearable largely due to the rowdy behaviour of street kids. It becomes also difficult for the ZRP to hunt down people without a social identity.

The only way to deal with daylight robbery is for the ZRP to deploy more police officers at various spots of the CBD.
