Help police tame reckless drivers

-

EDITOR — The accident that happened in Kadoma recently was really saddening. We know there is reckless driving on our roads and the main culprits are public transport operators.

While we mourn the departed, let us introspect on how we should treat unscrupulous passenger vehicle drivers and operators.

I have witnessed one bus driver overtaking in full view of oncoming traffic.

In the process the bus driver caused a Honda Fit and an Isuzu double cab to veer off the road while the truck he was overtaking overturned.

The bus driver, whose name I was later given, proceeded as though nothing had happened. I overtook him and reported the matter to the police who were attending a roadblock. This happened along Masvingo-Harare road in the afternoon.

Some public transport drivers are simply reckless.

Road carnage has also been compounded by some reckless haulage truck drivers and pirating taxi drivers (mushika-shika).

We have them doing all sorts of shenanigans on our urban roads in Harare, Gweru, Chinhoyi, Mutare and Bulawayo as well as other small towns like Rusape, Karoi and Chipinge, yet we fall short on action.

How many more people must die for us to act?

I am appealing to the President to attend to the issue of traffic policing in the urban areas and on our highways

This is a low hanging fruit and can be addressed if we commit ourselves to it.

May the souls of those innocent ones who perished in that tragic accident rest in peace. The Government of Zimbabwe through its various institutions and agencies should help clear our roads of this man-made scourge.
