Charles Manyuchi to scout talent in Manicaland

- Luthando Mapepa Sports Correspondent

PROFESSIONAL boxer and former World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion, Charles Manyuchi said he will begin to scout boxing talent from Manicaland grassroots.

Manyuchi is running a sports academy in Chivhu where he was allocated 3.5 hectares of land by Chikomba Rural District Council for his academy. He told Post Sports that he is scouting for more talent in the rural parts of the province.

Manyuchi, who is rated the 35th best boxer in the world in his category, was in Chipinge last week on Thursday on a look and learn tour of Magistics Gangara Farm owned by Prosper Chibaya.

“There is a lot of untapped talent in the grassrots hence my thrust is to expose those talents to be professionals. I also grew up in rural areas and I know where the talent is. I made some strides in tapping them so far from some areas and now its time for me to focus on Manicaland.

“My project Charles Manyuchi Sports Academy in Chivhu is well fenced and has administrative offices operational with state-ofthe-art resources.

“The academy is open to any talented sport person of any age. It also caters for soccer, volleyball and netball. We also focuses much on the under privileged and people from marginalised societies. Chipinge is my first choice since my business partner has a farm here,” said Manyuchi.

The academy has so far hosted three boxing tournaments and the latest was held in August this year against Zambians.

According to the boxing ace, no one from the Charles Manyuchi Sports Academy lost.

“All the boxers that we fielded won their fights. We have three female boxers who are doing well. We put value on our sport persons by giving them image in form of branded kits. We also give them decent pay-outs,” continued the top boxer.

Sports persons under Charles Manyuchi Sports Academy go in camp for a month before matches.

“Our sport person board in Harare’s leafy suburb of Borrowdale whenever we are to hold matches. We do this in order to give them enough attention so they enter competition fit and ready for the matches,” added Manyuchi.

Charles Manyuchi was born in Bulawayo and grew up in Mtoko where he attended school at Chifamba High in Mudzi. During his amateur boxing career, he joined boxing stables between 2006 and 2010 in sugar estate Triangle and later moved to Masvingo.

He was signed for professional boxing by Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotion of Zambia in 2012 when he went to the neighbouring country for a boxing tournament.

Manyuchi breeds dogs for sale as part of his income generating project at his 100 hectare farm in Chivhu that he was allocated by the Government.
