A MOZAMBICAN, who was part of a five-member gang that robbed and took turns to rape three students from Mutare Polytechnic has been arrested.

The cheeky criminals pounced on the students’ rented apartment at night armed with machetes and knives.

Phillip Boka (50) of Mugoriwondo Village, Machipanda in Mozambique was not asked to plead to the robbery and rape charges when he appeared before Mutare magistrate Ms Perseverance Makala last Thursday.

He is facing robbery and rape charges as defined in Section 126 and 65 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23. Mr Chris Munyuki prosecuted. Allegations were that on September 24, Boka teamed up with four other accomplices who are still at large and broke into the students’ house. They were all armed with machetes and knives.

“The suspects smashed window panes using stones and gained entry into the house through the smashed windows. While inside the house, they ordered the students to keep quiet and demanded cash.

“The complainants told the suspects that they had no money. Boka and his accomplices took two cell phones and other household property valued at $2 675. They then raped the second complainant without protection and disappeared with the property,” said Mr Munyuki.

The complainants quickly made a police report resulting in the arrest of Boka.

He was remanded in custody to November 7 for routine remand.

Ms Makala advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
