Squeaky clean homes

-

HAPPY womens’ month ladies. This week we are giving you tips on how to keep your home clean and smelling fresh.

Avoid storing onions and potatoes together as both produce a gas that causes them to spoil quickly. Put two or three orange leaves in your hot palm oil on the fire. Let the leaves turn black before removing it. By then your palm oil becomes pure groundnut oil also giving your food a nice taste.

*To avoid feeling a peppering hotness on your hands after cutting pepper with bare hand, scrub your hand with salt and red oil then wash it.

If you happen to over salt a pot of soup, just drop in a peeled potato. The potato will absorb the excess salt.

If your soup or stew goes sour while warming it, add little piece of charcoal and remove after warming, the taste will come back.

Never put citrus fruits (oranges, lemon, lime, etc) or tomatoes in the fridge. The low temperature degrades the aroma and flavor of these fruits.

When storing empty airtight containers, throw in a pinch of salt to keep them from getting stinky. If your salt is becoming lumpy, put a few grains of rice in with it to absorb excess moisture.

To reuse cooking oil without tasting whatever was cooked in the oil previously, cook a 1/4” piece of ginger in the oil. It will remove any remaining flavours and odours.

When using cobra on your floors, use a wet cloth, it lasts longer. Place a tab of soap or a fabric softener satchet in your linen cupboard, they will always smell nice.

Use nail vanish remover to wipe off ink scribbles on your leather sofas. When frying things on the stove top, put a dish towel on top of the knobs. That way the oil won’t get inside the knobs and you will not scratch your stove or erase the numbers on the knobs when cleaning. Cut a lemon in half, put in a bowl of water and microwave for two minutes on high to eliminate any microwave odours.

You can use baking soda to clean fridges. It cleans very well and removes bad odour.

For better organisation of your bedding, use one standard pillowcase of each bedding set to pack all sheets, duvet cover, frill and other pillowcases on that specific set. By so doing you won’t struggle to look for any item from a specific set. The sets can then be arranged neatly one on top of each other such that the day you want to change your bedding you can neatly pull out the pillowcase with a specific set then you find all items for that set bundled in one place.

When cooking offals, for example maguru and matumbu, place a small bowl of vinegar on the side, you will not see any flies around. Mix a little methylated spirit and water in a spray bottle to clean windows and glass surfaces. After cleaning your stove or those silver pots, take a cloth and wipe them with purple methylated spirit. Take a dry cloth and shine them, you will be satisfied with the results. Do that on all your pots, stove, surfaces and microwave door for that shiny look.

And lastly, play your favourite music while cleaning, it makes the job easy and fun.
