Zimra prejudiced of US$13 000

THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority recently impounded a Mutare man’s newly acquired Landrover Discovery 4 that had been smuggled into the country, thereby prejudicing the State of US$13 300 in unpaid duty.

This emerged when 33-year-old Tendai Marshal Mudzongachiso of Fairbridge Park recently appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe, facing smuggling charges. Mudzongachiso, who was a self-actor, denied the charges and was remanded out of custody to June 5 on $500 bail. Appearing for the State, Mr Nyasha Gerald Mukonyora said on May 6, police received information that Mudzongachiso was in possession of a white Landrover Discovery 4, Registration Number AFE1857, that had been smuggled from South Africa.

Sergeant Masese and Constable Manyandure swiftly reacted to the information and proceeded to Chikanga 2, where they saw the vehicle parked inside a garage.

People at the house advised Mudzongachiso to come over.

“Upon arrival, Mudzongachiso was asked to produce the relevant documents for the vehicle. He produced a Zimbabwean registration book for the car.

“Sergeant Masese called the Zimra office to verify the documents. It was confirmed that the vehicle was registered in Mudzongachiso’s name, but was on Zimra’s list of wanted vehicles that had been smuggled into the country without paying duty,”said Mr Mukonyora.

The smuggled vehicle was seized by Zimra on notice of Seizure Number 003034.
