Blindfolded granny robbed:
TO make an elderly person happy is the noblest act a young person can ever do, goes a popular saying.
However, this emerged to be a different case for a Zimunya man (31) who recently did the unthinkable and covered his 100 years old grandmother’s head with a cloth, before grabbing her wallet stashed with US$5 000, R600 and $1 500 from her brassiere.
This emerged when Tawanda Chinjakasi from Zvoushe Village appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ms Notebulgar Muchineripi on Tuesday.
He was facing robbery charges as defined in Section 126 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9.23.
The dreadlocked Chinjakasi pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to June 17.
Prosecuting, Mr Nyasha Mukonyora said the incident, which left the gallery speechless, happened on May 28.
He said Chinjakasi is Gogo Easter Zvoushe’s grandson. “On May 28 at around 3pm, Chinjakasi took advantage of his grandmother’s advanced age and the fact that she was alone at home to pounce on her,” he said.
It is alleged that Chinjakasi approached his grandmother, who was sitting in the dinning room, and covered her head with a cloth, before searching her.
When he got inside her bra, he grabbed a black wallet.
“The wallet contained US$5 000, R600 and $1 500. After stealing the wallet, Chinjakasi left the room, leaving the complainant covered with the cloth. On May 31, a report was made to the police and investigations led to Chinjakasi’s arrest,” said Mr Mukonyora.
Only $3 408 and US$100 was recovered.
