Poultry project for Makoni youths

- Samuel Kadungure

IN a bid to unlock the economic potential of marginalised and disadvantaged communities, Stengel Logistics has rolled out a poultry project to create employment for the young people in Makoni North.

Stengel Logistics’ director, Mr Edmore Madhume was recently co-opted into the Zanu PF provincial youth executive and has donated 3 000 chicks to the youths in the constituency.

The chicks were handed over at an event officiated by Zanu PF provincial secretary for security, Cde Francis Muchenje and provincial youth executive member, Cde innocent Magutakuona, at the party’s district offices in Rusape.

The beneficiaries of the poultry project are youths in the constituency’s 29 party districts.

They have since been trained in business management and poultry production.

One of the beneficiaries, Cde Ratidzo Musevenzo of Hangaiwa District is optimistic that the poultry project will transform the welfare of the young people in Makoni North.

“The project is expected to lift us from poverty. I am optimistic that we will see a socio-economic transformation of the youths in the near future,” she said.

Cde Magutakuona told the beneficiaries that the project will help speed up the area’s development.

“Cde Madhume is providing support to young entrepreneurs in starting, strengthening and managing their poultry projects. Sustainable rural development cannot occur without the empowerment of rural youths. Poultry farming is an initiative that can generate employment for thousands of rural youths in Manicaland,” said Cde Magutakuona.

Cde Madhume said the project is a way of empowering the youths.

“We need to horn their entrepreneurial skills. This programme is aimed at empowering the youths and enabling them to be self-reliant so that they can contribute to national development.

“Government is playing its part in empowering the youths and we are also playing our part in creating a conducive environment for the youths to embrace agriculture, which is an economic pillar for the country.

“Apart from boosting food security, this initiative creates employment,” said Cde Madhume.
