Rugby star Chibuwe keeps eyes on the prize

DANGAMVURA-BORN Zimbabwe international rugby player, Ngoni Chibuwe, is looking forward to the resumption of Romania Supa Liga Season where he could be on a move to a new club ahead of the start of training sessions on January 18.

Chibuwe found a new home in Romania just before the 2019 rugby season after his marriage with Spanish giants, Getxo ended prematurely.

Initially, Chibuwe’s move was inspired by the need to get more national team game time.

“I might be moving to a new club if negotiations are completed in time before the start of the season. The move can only be made public if it comes to fruition. I am only focused with improving my game and winning matches for whichever club that I will be turning out for. It looks like we are back to normal here after a long spell,” said Chibuwe.

Currently, Chibuwe is in Tomitanii Rugby Club books. After playing at Getxo in Spain for three and half months, he moved on as there was increasing friction between club and national duties.

Getxo club was not happy with him missing games while on national duty during the Dubai and Cape Town legs of the World Rugby Sevens Series of 2019.

Chibuwe attended Mutare Boys’ High School and later Hillcrest College before moving to South Africa to join the Shark Academy side.

His professional rugby career, however, set off in 2015 after being drafted into the Sharks Sevens rugby side. In the same year, he received his first Sables cap after being drafted into the squad for the Hong Kong Cup of Nations tournament and his career has been on an upward trajectory ever since as he went on to make the Sharks’ squad for the 2017 Currie Cup qualifiers.

He has also established himself as a key member of the Cheetahs squad, playing a key role in the World Cup qualifiers before featuring in almost all the team’s matches at the global showpiece.

He has featured for Old Georgians locally and South African club, Durban Collegians.

Chibuwe is also heavily involved in the development of rugby in Mutare after launching his rugby academy, Hearts of Stones in 2017.
