TODAY, Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honour the achievements of women across the globe and throughout history.

This day is not just about celebration, but also about reflection, advocacy and action.

International Women’s Day was first observed in the early 20th century as an event to promote equal rights for women, including the right to vote.

Today, it has evolved into a global day of recognition and celebration in developed and developing countries alike.

Each year, International Women’s Day carries a theme, and this year’s theme is: “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”.

On this International Women’s Day, we are honouring women in our lives, our mothers, sisters, friends and colleagues as we take a moment to appreciate their contributions, celebrate their achievements, and stand with them in their struggles. Together, we can make a difference and create a more balanced world.

On this day, we celebrate the remarkable achievements these and many other women in various fields and women at The Manica Post have joined the celebrations.

The International Women’s Day is a day when our focus is on women across the globe, also looking at issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women. We also recognise the achievements of women and the role they play in our society as role models and life-givers as they give birth to doctors, presidents, engineers, teachers, you name it. They play an important role in the family set-up as the Shona phrase goes — ‘Musha mukadzi’.

Women are the world’s greatest inspiration. Full of passion, dedication, and determination that continues to drive positive change and make a lasting impact on society. I feel we should continue to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Happy Women’s Day to every woman out there.
