Zimbabwe A rugby comes to Mutare

- Takudzwa Manzero

ZIMBABWE national rugby team will square off against Manicaland Rugby Select side in a test match at Mutare Boys’ High School’s Fleming Ground tomorrow (Saturday).

Recently appointed national team coach, Pieter Benade and his charges’ visit marks a huge stride in the promotion of rugby talent in the province.

Speaking to Post Sport ahead of the fixture this weekend, Benade said:

“It is a pleasure coming around and looking at the beautiful facilities. The field is certainly playable, so the potential is there to enjoy a beautiful day of rugby after a few touch-ups. Fans should come in their numbers as they are guaranteed of top quality rugby.”

Manicaland Rugby Board (MRB) chairperson,

Moss Kapumha said the decision to select Fleming Field as the venue of the match was motivated by the fact that it carries rich rugby heritage since its foundation stone was laid in 1970.

“It is a special place for rugby at Fleming Field, and a lot of people resonate with the place. People have witnessed and remember the game’s greatest players for giving their all at the ground before joining national teams, therefore it is the best choice to host this high profile match,” he said.

Manicaland Rugby Board in partnership with Zimbabwe Rugby Union conducted a coaching clinic at Chinyausunzi Ground yesterday (Thursday) as part of their corporate social responsibility where they trained grassroots players in on-field tactics and fitness.

The game of rugby in Manicaland has been on a development trajectory in recent years, with Manicaland Select Rugby team recently winning the hearts and minds of many neutrals due to a refined performance during the opening weekend of the Nedbank Challenge Cup in Harare recently.
