SA comedian coming to Harare

- BY VANISHA RAMJEE

POPULAR South African comedian, riaad moosa is set to grace Harare with his jesting flare on July 31.

Event organiser Clint robinson of C & A Entertainment said preparation for the show were at an advanced stage.

“All that is left is for the ‘Comedy Doctor’ to arrive and give us a dose of laughter.” The show is already 80% sold out so for those who have not yet booked, do not hesitate.

“I think it is a big boost for the comedy sector because we [in Zimbabwe] have an industry that is in its infancy. The comedians are performing a show here and there and getting an audience from about 50-100 people so this event will create opportunity,” said robinson.

He explained that he moved away from the music industry as there was much friction between artists; “I would like to believe that the comedy sector will not start out this way and with moosa coming, doors are going to open and hopefully more artists will venture out to Zimbabwe.”

moosa, a medical doctor by profession, is not new to film and theatre. He featured in the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated movie,

where he played the role of Ahmed Kathrada.

He started doing comedy while at medical school at the University of Cape Town and has won several awards, including the Comics Choice Award at the inaugural Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards in march 2011 and Safta (South African Film and Television Award) for Best Actor for his role in which also received Safta’s for Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor in 2013. moosa was involved in the

concert in February 2010 alongside South Africa’s top comedians — Trevor Noah, David Kau, John Vlismas, Tumi morake and marc Lottering — where he was one of the headline acts supporting international superstar Eddie Izzard. This event raised funds for the ongoing work done by charities that fall under the Nelson mandela Foundation.

He performed his most recent standup comedy tour to over 35 000 people all over Africa in 2013 and his previous one-man shows

and which went viral live and on DVD.

will be performed live on stage at Harry mongolis, on Friday at 7pm. robinson said this will be a high-end affair bringing together “the who’s who” in terms of local talent as supporting acts.

Tickets for the show are available at Sopranos in Avondale.
