Mosimane stays grounded despite reaching final

CAIRO — Al Ahly first team manager Pitso Mosimane said that he’s happy with his side’s performance against Wydad but believes they have to quickly start preparing for the Champions League final.

Al Ahly claimed a place in the final of Africa's top club competition for a record-extending 13th time as they beat Wydad Casablanca of Morocco 3-1 in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Friday for a 5-1 aggregate win.

Under Mosimane, the Reds were able to earn two convincing wins against Wydad Casablanca in the semis, 2-0 away and 3-1 at home.

Despite the positive result, the South African manager believes that they should start preparing for the final.

“We performed well in both home and away games against Wydad,” said Mosimane.

“We played better in the first leg but we still haven’t reached the level I’m aspiring for, also our passing wasn’t on point.

“We still have a lot of work to do in the coming period. We’ll flip the page on the Wydad page as we have a lot of work to do in preparation for the final.

“Al Ahly reached the final on several occasions in the last seven years but failed to win any. Hopefully, we’ll return with the title this time around,” he concluded.

Ahly, who have won the Champions League a record eight times, must wait until next weekend to find out who they play in the final on November 6.

The second leg of the semi-final between Zamalek of Egypt and Raja Casablanca was scheduled for Saturday but postponed by eight days because of an outbreak of Covid-19 infections in the Raja camp.

Zamalek, who will now host the return in Cairo on November 1, lead 1-0 from the first leg in Morocco.
