Great move on local languages

-

EDITOR - Teaching all subjects in local languages at ECD level is commendable. We need our children to think highly of their own languages and appreciate them. This gives them a sense of identity. I was saddened one day to hear a certain lady say, “I need to transfer my child from that school as she cannot speak English with an accent. Mwana waRon speaks kunge murungu chaiye. They don’t learn Shona; ndoda kuti aende ikoko.”

The lady wanted her daughter to speak like a white man. I thought to myself that we are really lost and beginning to lose our sense of identity.

I resent the fact that our roads, schools etcetera still represent the colonial era.

Naming our schools after heroes of England and others will not does us any good.

This in itself is not right; we need to be proud of who we are — talk about identity, culture and language. I need this for my children. The history we studied during our time was mostly European.

We now need to move to African history and include the history of other countries as we see fit. The British teach their own history. We need to have a deeper understanding of our own as this will shed light on today and may lead to a better tomorrow.

In addition, healthy lifestyles need be advocated from ECD.

This may help reduce our health bills as we conscientise our children right from an early age to reduce sugar intake, drink water instead of sugary drinks, eat fruits instead of cake and biscuits and eat organic and freshly-cooked foods instead of tinned foods.

It’s difficult to teach an adult about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Kire, Via Email
