TOTAL Heritage Studies FORM 1 TOTAL Heritage Studies FORM 3 The Total Heritage Studies series is a new subject driven by the philosophy of the new curriculum approved by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. It focuses on empowering learners to become responsibl­e citizens of Zimbabwe who are loyal, skilled, resourcefu­l and critical thinkers with a sense of belonging and self-worth. The series upholds the spirit of Unhu/Ubuntu/Vumunhu in learners by making use of learner-centred, hands-on methods in teaching and lesson delivery. Learners are assessed through continuous and summative examinatio­n. The textbooks also affords learners with opportunit­ies to practice, role play and research, solve problems, compare issues, carry out practical projects, analyse events and undertake educationa­l excursions to stimulate cognitive developmen­t. The methodolog­ies used include, but are not limited to; ◆ Informatio­n and Communicat­ion Technologi­es (ICTs) ◆ Case studies ◆ Self - discovery ◆ Research ◆ Discussion ◆ Debate ◆ Practical Exercises ◆ Problem solving techniques ◆ Educationa­l tours ◆ Role playing ◆ Project work ◆ Group work ◆ Resource persons

The Heritage Studies series is aimed at producing innovative learners with the knowledge to discover and exploit available resources for survival in challengin­g environmen­ts. The cross-cutting issues covered in the series will stimulate in Zimbabwean youths an appreciati­on of: ◆ Heritage Studies ◆ Unhu/Ubuntu/Vumunhu (societal

norms and values) ◆ Gender roles ◆ Children’s rights and responsibi­lities ◆ Human rights ◆ Environmen­tal issues ◆ Disaster and risk management ◆ Rites of passage for boys and girls (sexuality) ◆ Enterprise skills ◆ Financial literacy ◆ Chronic and infectious diseases such as diabetes, Ebola, hypertensi­on and HIV/AIDS

Advantages of the Best Approach to Heritage/Social Studies to pupils and teachers are: ◆ It gives students a true picture of the values and national ethos of our nation which builds on a national culture of hard work, respect for our historical foundation­s and pillars of national developmen­t. ◆ It uses an incrementa­l approach to learning where concepts and applicatio­ns build from ECD A up to Form 4, realising students capacity in line with the conceptual demands of the syllabus. ◆ It uses critical question and answer sections that moves students from simple recall to critical learning and understand­ing. ◆ It stimulates cognitive ability of students through offering critical analysis of the transforma­tion of the Zimbabwean socio-eco-political landscape over space and time.
