The School of Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation

The field of wildlife, ecology and conservation is part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and aims at safe guarding biological diversity while also enhancing sustainable development.

Ecologists make best use of the available sciences drawing from different disciplines such as Agriculture, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Geoinformatics, Mammalogy, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology, in order to sustainably utilise wildlife and other natural resources.

With the advent of technology, which has become more accessible and continues to play a vital role in everyday life, ecologists have also begun to utilise some of these innovative advancements in conserving biodiversity.

The School of Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation provides students with a strong foundation in Science and Technology to explore the intriguing ecology of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates.

Besides, examining the ecological processes themselves, the field also looks at the wider social and legal context in which conservation operates. The School offers degree programmes which are unique, tailor-made

AND innovative in their crafting. These programs were deliberately cast in order to fill a specific gap left by other degree programmes mostly offering traditional or orthodox and theoretical approaches to wildlife management, sustainable development and conservation.

Our degree programmes emphasize a holistic approach to environmental issues and focus on not only freshwater resources, wildlife and fisheries in a purely ecological sense but also the social dynamics which are often cast in totally different disciplines at many universities.

This is complimented by a wholesome teaching and learning approach (theory, practicals, field visits and bush school, attachments and exhibits).

We realise that community engagement and the inclusion of social aspects premised on technological advances offers more sustainable solutions to the local and regional problems encountered in wildlife conservation.

The programmes currently offered are: BSc (Hons) Wildlife Ecology and Conservation; BSc (Hons) Wildlife and Safari Management, BSc (Hons) Freshwater and Fishery Science, Master and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The School of Art and Design focuses its energies toward the development of the creative arts and design. Its establishment was a direct response to manpower development needs in our manufacturing industries and other economic sectors such as the media industry.

The School of Art and Design seeks to create opportunities for excellence in art and design and clothing and textiles needed in Zimbabwe in particular and the world at large. In addition to nurturing creative, proficient and versatile artists, designers and art and design scholars and researchers, the School is committed to promoting the application of technology in art making practice and analysis, the creation of rigorous scholarship in art and design and the promotion of creative application of fine art and skills in innovative production design processes in order to meet the demand for highly creative personnel for both the public and the private sectors.
