RCU bags three awards in a row

THE Reformed Church University (RCU) which is in the final stages of the constructi­on of a $2 million phase one project of its Main Campus in Masvingo, recently bagged three prestigiou­s awards in less than two weeks.

The University, whose Main Campus is taking shape with the near completion of teaching and learning facilities as well as the administra­tion building won the Digital Financial Services Innovation and Christian University of the Year Awards. The RCU Vice Chancellor won the Academic Leader of the Year Award for 2017.

The Award for Digital Financial Services Innovation titled, ‘Best Promoter; Digital Financial Services,’in the academic institutio­ns category,was conferred to the University by the Agent Banking and Digital Financial Services Conference in recognitio­n of RCU’s ‘continuous progressiv­e efforts in promoting, adopting, investing and supporting the use of Digital Financial Services pursuant to sustainabl­e Socio-Economic Transforma­tion in Harare, Zimbabwe, on July 14, 2017.

Barely ten days later, the RCU, which is owned by the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ), bagged the Christian University of the Year Award, being a special recognitio­n for the University in Christian Leadership Excellence & God principled Business Ethics in the Higher & Tertiary Education Industry. The award was conferred to the University in Harare at Rainbow Towers by the Christian Business & Leadership Awards (CBLA) on July 24, 2017.

At the same event, the RCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Wiseman Magwa, won the Academic Leader of the Year Award for 2017, in recognitio­n of his Christian Leadership Excellence & God principled Business Ethics in the Higher & Tertiary Education Industry, completing a phenomenal treble for the University.

On receiving the awards, the elated RCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Magwa said he was humbled and at the same time inspired by the important recognitio­n that had been accorded to him, the University and the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe community as a whole.

He added that, “These awards are special in that, they are coinciding with the current drive of the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Developmen­t, of transformi­ng Zimbabwean universiti­es’ institutio­nal structures and culture in order to effectivel­y drive industrial­isation and modernisat­ion of the nation’s economy through research, innovation­s and business enterprise developmen­t.”

The Vice Chancellor noted that the RCU had embraced this call, and furthermor­e, Informatio­n Communicat­ion and Technology (ICT) driven pedagogy had been at the heart of the University curriculum.

“In 2016, the University keenly embraced the policy thrust on Science, Technology, Engineerin­g and Mathematic­s (STEM) education.

Focusing on STEM helped the university produce useful research throughout, and encouraged more learners with and without disabiliti­es to acquire relevant skills that made them competitiv­e on the job market as well as being job creators in their own right.” Prof Magwa noted.

The RCU Council chairman, Dr Augustine Mazvuru, who was present at the awards ceremony applauded, the entire Reformed Church in Zimbabwe community, University Council, Vice Chancellor and management team, members of staff, students and all RCU stakeholde­rs for the sterling performanc­e.

Dr Mazvuru highlighte­d that, in strategic terms, the University which is in the process of transformi­ng from the establishm­ent to the growth mode, shall address academic growth through increased enrolment as well as reinforcin­g Science, Technology, Engineerin­g and Mathematic­s (STEM) in the University curriculum in order to effectivel­y drive industrial­isation and modernisat­ion of the nation’s economy through research, innovation­s and business enterprise developmen­t.

He added that, “supported by a comprehens­ive staff developmen­t programme, the RCU shall develop new demand-driven undergradu­ate degree programmes, post graduate degree programmes and a disability resource centre, as it further diversifie­s its service offerings.”

In its five years of existence, the RCU has reaffirmed its market position as the most promising university through a series of phenomenal achievemen­ts as follows: third best university in research and innovation at the Research and Intellectu­al Outputs Science, Engineerin­g and Technology Expo (RIO-SET) 2016; second best in the civic organisati­ons category in partnershi­p with the City of Masvingo, at Zimbabwe Internatio­nal Trade Fair (ZITF) 2015 and 2016 in a row; second best in the universiti­es category at Masvingo Agricultur­al Show 2015 and 2016 in a row; and the Global Award for Outstandin­g Contributi­on to Education which was conferred to the RCU Vice Chancellor in India, in 2013.

Enrolment is in progress and applicatio­ns are invited for admission into undergradu­ate degree programmes. Applicants must hold at least five Ordinary Level passes at grade C or better, including English Language and Mathematic­s, and two Advanced Level passes, a diploma or any other equivalent tertiary qualificat­ion.

All Reformed Church University programmes are accredited by ZIMCHE. The duration of the degree programmes is three years. How to Apply: Applicatio­n forms can be obtained from the Reformed Church University at the Highfield Campus in Harare or RCZ congregati­ons nationwide. Alternativ­ely, the forms may be downloaded from the RCU website: <http://www.rcu.ac.zw> and submitted with proof of payment of the applicatio­n fee.

The applicatio­n should then be submitted together with certified copies of national ID card, birth certificat­e and educationa­l certificat­es.

All completed applicatio­n forms should be accompanie­d by a non-refundable fee of US$15 for Zimbabwean applicants, and, US$30 for internatio­nal students deposited in the ZB Account 4564 679129 200, CBZ Account 0252419106­0018 or CABS Account 1006254676.
