Chicken Inn behaving like chickens

on him delivering the league title. But for Gumbo what is the excuse? While yours truly has respect for all the coaches in the land — including Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe and his oversized suits — there are some gaffers he cannot trust when the pressure is on. One of those coaches is Rahman. I lost my faith in Gumbo in Angola on October 14, 2012 when the Warriors fell 0-2 to the hosts in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Estadio 11 November.

Zimbabwe had beat Angola 3-1 in the first leg and needed a draw, or a 2-1 lose, to qualify for Afcon but Gumbo — and to some extent Aerial Sibanda — managed to make sure that we handed Manucho two early goals and Angola a ticket to Afcon.

The tale of that Angola trip will be told another day, another Sunday when we go retro. If we may stay in the now, shall we? Chicken Inn always harp on and on about protecting the corporate image they carry but their behaviour at Ascot last weekend made a mockery of those statements.

In their wisdom — or clearly lack thereof — the Gamecocks walked off the park in protest against a late, late penalty that was awarded to Yadah Stars in a Chibuku Super Cup first round clash.

Referee Munyaradzi Majoni pointed to the spot after the overweight Milton Makopa was wrestled to the ground in the 86th minute.

In a moment of madness, Gumbo summoned his players to the touchline in protest.

A few minutes later, an executive member who was in the stands brought a mobile phone to the Chicken Inn bench and a decision to walk away from that clash was arrived at. It was shocking! Seventy two hours after their lunacy at Ascot, Chicken Inn made the trip to Harare and fell 0-1 to a Caps United side that barely deserved three points after putting up a sterile show.

But one can understand Makepekepe, the game load has been heavy on them and if they can win after playing as badly as they did at the National Sports Stadium on Wednesday then no one in their camp will complain.

The tale, however, is different to title chasing Chicken Inn.

With the league heading towards the business end, there is little room for error but Gumbo’s men did not look like they were in it against Makepekepe.

The must have been suffering from the after effects of Ascot.

And if you think the Ascot stunt did not have a psychological effect on the Chicken Inn players then you need an urgent trip to that hip-hop dressing sangoma — Sekuru Kamwelo Banda.

When Yadah were awarded that penalty there were still four minutes, plus some injury time to play, and anything — including Elvis Chipezeze saving the penalty – could have happened.

However, Gumbo in his own buffoonery denied his goalkeeper a chance to be a hero, he denied his team a chance to show their worth.

Did Rahman not believe that Chipezeze, and his needles, would have stopped the penalty?

That Yadah bring anointing oil to matches does not mean that everything goes their way, their penalty taker could have skied the ball from 11 meters out.
