This madness must be stopped
EDITOR — The price madness that gripped the nation in September should never be repeated.
To prevent such occurrences, Government should put in place stringent measures to curb wanton price hikes.
September 21-23, 2017 saw Zimbabwe engulfed by panic-buying that led to prices of many basic commodities increasing and the goods themselves disappearing from shops.
I’m glad that President Mugabe has appointed a Cabinet Committee to deal with the matter.
The work of this committee should be done expeditiously so that we see results on the market.
I have no doubt that since the President himself is overseeing the matter, this team will do a good job. But what one would want are sustainable solutions, and that lies in raising our industrial productivity.
Whatever recommendations will be put forward to the President, we need them to include rapid industrial growth.
It is possible if only we remain consistent and committed to working.
Price spirals occasioned by some social media message should not deter us from the work at hand. We started well with the bumper harvest last season and SI64 which aims to encourage local production.
Therefore, all we need to do is consolidate these gains and look forward to good times ahead. Rennie, Harare
