Bridget smiles to a new life
BRIDGET Zireni, a 16-year-old who underwent a successful operation to remove 18 kilogrammes of growth from her abdomen, was yesterday discharged from hospital.
Mrs Mary Chiwenga, the wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, came in to assist with medical supplies after Chitungwiza Central Hospital had offered surgery free of charge.
Bridget and her parents were all smiles as they left Chitungwiza Central Hospital yesterday. They were grateful for the timely assistance that came from Musha Mukadzi’s chairperson, Mrs Chiwenga; and Chitungwiza Central Hospital’s chief executive officer, Dr Obadiah Moyo.
In a brief interview with The Sunday Mail, Bridget expressed her determination to return to school.
“I feel great and I want to thank everyone who helped me. I can now go to school,” she said.
Bridget’s parents, Ms Nelia Mupangami and Mr Davious Zireni said the surgery came at a time when they feared the worst.
“We met Mrs Chiwenga when she came to visit Bridget in the ICU after surgery. That is when we learnt that she was the one helping with drugs and blood units,” said Mr Zireni.
Mr Zireni appealed for cash donations to settle a $700 medical bill that accrued during Bridget’s admission at Murambinda and Mutare hospitals.
Dr Moyo said tests are still being conducted to ascertain the disease that had infected Bridget.
“Our doctors have done extremely well and we now look forward to Bridget’s full recovery,” he said.
“We want to thank everybody who helped her, including Mrs Chiwenga, the Vice President’s wife, she has contributed a lot to make it possible for the child to have a new lease of life.”
