LAST week, President Mnangagwa officially set the legislative agenda for the First Session of the Ninth Parliament and delivered his maiden State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Presenting the legislative agenda with Bills that cut across the socio-economic and political life of the country, President Mnangagwa said Parliament would seek to give urgency to the country’s economic turnaround drive.

However, MDC legislators decided to walk out as the legislative agenda was being set.

It became evident that the politically immature legislators are not in Parliament to represent the people’s interests, but to serve their own interests.

This was an event that sought to point in the direction that the nation will be taking for the next five years. How then are the said MPs going to hold Government accountable for its policies when they walk out during presentation of the same?

However, despite the ill-advised decision to walk out, Zimbabwe is ready to move on with or without the MDC MPs.

From the President’s SONA, it is evident that Government’s major focus is rebuilding the enonomyy through implementation of various policies.

The international community is offering support to the Government.

Outgoing British Ambassador Ms Catriona Laing has said Britain has a plan to re-engage Zimbabwe and support the country with its reform agenda to attract foreign investment.

The same sentiments were echoed by The International Monetary when it pledged to help Zimbabwe craft a debt clearance strategy.

It is surely time to focus on rebuilding this country, with or without the naysayers.
