Mafikizolo back in town

SOUTH African group Mafikizolo is set for a sensational return during a gig at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on September 6.

Their last commercial show in the country was in 2017 when, together with Jah Prayzah, they worked wonders on stage during gigs in Harare and Kadoma. Mafikizolo is not new to the HICC. In fact, the group has created memories at the giant auditorium as it has been pivotal in strengthening their support base in the country.

They are one of the few, if not the only foreign group, that has risen to the occasion whenever they have performed in Zimbabwe.

In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Mail Society from his South African base, Mafikizolo’s manager Modise Kgomo said his team is upbeat about the forthcoming gig.

He also highlighted that they are bringing in a solid ensemble consisting of dancers and live instrument players.

“My team is raring to go and the people of Zimbabwe should expect nothing short of magic on the day. We have been there before but we are promising to move the game to a new high.

“We have a huge catalogue with both new and old songs, we will select tracks from there. But of note are the songs we recently did with Jah Prayzah and Wizkid, they will be part of the playlist. Our fans should follow us on @mafikizo_africa for more details,” said Kgomo.

According to PromaEvents, the gig’s organisers, the show will be more of a reunion affair for the group and their local fans.

“It has been long since Mafikizolo last had a public function in the country. We noticed fans now want them back and we are delivering. This will be more of a summer ignition concert,” said show coordinator Blessing Jeke.

“It’s going to be a big and memorable event. The group has never disappointed each time they come to Zimbabwe. They have an understanding of the local market so revellers should expect nothing short of fireworks,” said Jeke.

Mafikizolo, made up of Theo Kgsinkwe and Mhlanhla Nciza, has been in the music industry for the past 22 years. The Afro-pop group has stood the test of time and they have immensely contributed to the growth of music in South Africa.

Through joining forces with local artistes such as Jah Prayzah and the late Dr Oliver Mtukudzi, they have also done the same in Zimbabwe.

For the forthcoming gig, Mafikizolo is expected to share the stage with a number of artistes, among them Tocky Vibes and Selmor Mtukudzi.

Added Jeke: “The date and venue has been secured. We, however, are going to announce more local artistes for the show in due course.”

Dubbed “Mafikizolo Back in Town”, the gig is expected to attract thousands of revellers as has been the case with the group’s previous shows.

Mafikizolo released its debut self-titled album in 1997, which was followed by “Music Revolution” in 1999.

They shot to fame when their single, “Lotto”, became a smash hit.
