ZANU PF’s Youth League has lauded Government for ramping up the Covid19 national vaccination programme, as the number of vaccinated Zimbabweans has now exceeded 100 000.

Last week the country received one million vaccines from China, with authorities further pledging to procure one million doses every month to vaccinate at least 60 percent of the population to achieve herd immunity.

In a statement, the ruling party’s acting deputy secretary for Youth Affairs, Cde Tendai Chirau, said the procurement of vaccines is evidence of shrewd leadership and commitment to saving lives.

“We unreservedly pay profound homage to His Excellency, our President Cde ED Mnangagwa and his administration for the robust vaccination drive, which remains crucial to national efforts towards an effective arrest of the pandemic,” he said.

“We are grateful for the President’s rapid response; a response that can be described as sheer statecraft acumen. The US$100 million Treasury injection towards the vaccination programme aptly substantiates Government’s commitment to the sustainable welfare needs of our people.”

Cde Chirau commended the Governments of China and India for their timely donations, which are a testament of strong relations shared between Zimbabwe and the two countries. “We also extend heartfelt appreciation to the governments of the People’s Republic of China under His Excellency Cde Xi Jin Ping, and India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for their unprecedented humanitarian intervention through their respective generous Covid-19 vaccine offers to our country.

“The two gestures substantiate the profundity of our fraternal relations which are imbued on humanist diplomacy than usual political multilateralism. Such linkages at a diplomatic level in times of crisis only buttress the essence of humanity,” he said.

As of Friday, Zimbabwe had 36 903 confirmed cases, including 34 708 recoveries and 1 524 deaths. To date, a total of 103 815 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

In her weekly update on Friday, Chief Co-ordinator of the national response to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Agnes Mahomva, said the national vaccination programme will continue to gather momentum this week.

“As we celebrate Easter, let us all plan to vaccinate, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from big crowds,” she said.
