An eye-opening exhibition
AS buses rolled into the school yard, curiosity and excitement got the better of learners at St John’s Chikwaka.
Different people made it to the school and murmurs could be heard as learners eagerly awaited to see what was on offer.
The following day, people from different provinces pitched exhibition tents and decorated their tables to showcase what they had brought.
The exhibition was organised as a way of recognising the International Literacy Day that takes place on September 8 every year.
Several companies — including WW2 Industries, which was advertising science labs — took part in the event at St John’s. Jedz Holdings showcased drones and security systems, among other things.
National Building Society Bank urged teachers and learners to save money with financial institutions. The officials also talked about loan and mortgage facilities offered by the bank.
The second day of the event was oversubscribed.
The exhibitors were cheerful, and eloquently explained their products on display.
In the Harare Metropolitan tent were basketry and woodwork items, as well as other artifacts.
“This event is for everyone, including those with disabilities,” said a teacher from Harare, as she acknowledged the presence of some learners with disabilities.
In the Bulawayo Metropolitan marquee, focus was on horticulture and development of recycled material.
An exhibitor from Gotora Primary School in Manicaland said: “Unlocked literacy is a project we began in order to help instil discipline in children since many are losing their way.”
There were also artifacts that showcased our cultural heritage, particularly from Masvingo.
The officials explained that the region concentrates on drought-resistant crops due to low rainfall.
Special mention goes to St John’s learners, teachers and community members who gave it their all to make the day a success. Members of the Chemhanza and St John’s deco team worked hand-in-glove to make the Beithall look beautiful.
One of the event organisers from Mashonaland East, Mr Maturure, said: “This event was thrilling and memorable.”
Others like Mr Kasinganeti and Dr Elisha Kujeke said the event focused on skills development, adding that it was a great platform to showcase the school curriculum.
In the end, Mashonaland East province was announced winner for this year’s exhibition.
Chief Chikwaka graced the event. St John’s Chikwaka rector Father Nyarugwe and Father Zimbudzana gave the opening and closing prayers, respectively.
