Govt commits to affordable, efficient internet

- Sunday Mail Reporter

THE GOVERNMENT will continue to craft policies that promote access to affordable and efficient internet.

This was said by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera at the 12th edition of the Service Excellence Awards dinner on Friday.

“As the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, we are committed to the vision of increased use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) through the creation of policies that promote access to affordable and efficient internet,” she said.

“To this end, we have come up with a National Broadband Plan that seeks to promote the expansion of broadband infrastructure and promote demand for broadband.”

Minister Mavetera said the Government has plans to provide free public internet to improve citizens’ access to information and promote e-commerce.

Zimbabwe, she added, should be creating its own e-commerce platforms that are both user-friendly and interactive.

She, however, said local digital platforms should adhere to and promote the fundamental tenets of cyber-security.

The Service Excellence Awards are held annually as part of broader commemorations of the National Customer Service Week. Minister Mavetera also said innovation is a key element of good customer service.

“Zimbabwe has traditionally had a legacy and culture of outstanding service, which we must not only preserve but enhance through innovation, collaboration and unique combinations,” she said.

“Notably, the customer experience sector has continued to expand and diversify, and this is soft but critical because service excellence is a pivotal element of a performing economy.

“As we edge towards Vision 2030, as championed by His Excellency the President

Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, we must leave no customer behind in the digital era.

“Fostering a culture of service excellence must, therefore, certainly be high on the national agenda.”

She said corporates can distinguish themselves through offering unique customer service.

“We should, therefore, strive to contribute to the increased use of ICTs in all sectors of the economy and come up with customer-centric ICT solutions.”
