Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke returns
PLANS are underway for a bigger and better edition of the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke next month after organisers of the cycling event were impressed by the participation at last year’s edition.
“Last year, Nedbank came through as a title partner and this was a major milestone in the history of the sport.
“We are excited to say that they have shown confidence in the tour through renewing this partnership,” said Gabriel Choga, the event’s director.
“A total of 117 cyclists took part in last year’s tour, which was much higher than previous years, and we also witnessed a remarkable turnout from the communities.
“Participants not only included professional cyclists but also cycling enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
“We also had a record number of female cyclists (21).” This year’s three-day event is slated for November 2-4.
While registration is yet to reach the halfway mark, riders from Tsvaira Cycling Club, Guinea Fowl, Siyephambili, Harare and Ghetto cycling clubs have already confirmed their participation.
This is in addition to the usual cyclists from the YAFM Team, Unki Mine, Mimosa and Zimplats.
Overall, over 300 cyclists are expected. The event — which will be running under the theme “Cycling for wellness, opportunity and charity” — will see cyclists cover over 300 kilometres from Selous to Zvishavane.
The route will cover Chegutu, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru and Shurugwi.
“The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on our plans last year . . .
“Now, as we move forward, with the pandemic behind us, there is naturally a sense of anticipation to put up a bigger and better event,” said Choga.
“We recognise that the effects of the pandemic may still linger, and it is crucial for us to maintain vigilance and adaptability in organising any event going forward.
“The lessons we learned from the pandemic have highlighted the significance of contingency plans, increased safety protocols and effective communication with participants and stakeholders.
“We are also putting in place steps to ensure a secure, enjoyable and inclusive experience for everyone who will be involved.”
