Cancer power walk with a purpose

- Tirivashe Nyamukapa

THE eighth edition of the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk was successfully held at the Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare on November 4.

The annual fundraising event was organised by Zimpapers and ran under the theme “Close the Care Gap”.

Several educational institutions that include Munashe Private High School, Masaka High School and ZRP High School took part in the noble event.

Zimpapers public relations and communications manager Mrs Pauline Matanda directed the activities, and everything went smoothly.

Several donors came on board with different contributions, making the day a success.

There was entertainment galore throughout the campaign, while some food was served.

Participants were treated to some good music, aerobics and presentations by learners from different schools.

The major activity was the “hot walk”, as I would like to call it.

This saw participants walking a reasonable distance in groups, with the aim of raising cancer awareness.

Particular focus was on breast cancer, which has affected many women throughout the world.

Speakers highlighted the need for early testing and treatment to mitigate the effects of the disease.

A group of Chinese doctors, who operate from Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare, came in full support of the campaign.

From the event, we got valuable information on some of the causes of cancer, how it can be prevented or treated and the types of medication used. We hope to share the information with others

The campaign was indeed an eye-opener.
