5 000 teachers to be recruited next year

- Ray Bande in RIMBI, CHIPINGE

GOVERNMENT will recruit 5 000 teachers at the start of next year and the process, unlike in the past, will be decentralised to provincial centres, a Cabinet minister has said.

In his keynote address during belated World Teachers’ Day commemorations at Rimbi High School in Chipinge South constituency yesterday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo said the move to recruit more teachers is aimed at reducing the teacher-pupil ratio in classrooms.

“We want to get to a stage where one teacher will have 30 to at most 40 learners. We are urging trained teachers all over the country to register with their district offices near where they stay for them to be considered in the recruitment process,” he said.

Minister Moyo added: “This time around, teachers will get employed in their respective provinces. If you come from Manicaland, you get employed here. This way, we will not have any transfer requests. When one stays here in Rimbi community, they should get employed here because that has many advantages not only to the teacher himself or herself but also the sector as a whole.

“We have had cases of people being appointed from Harare and they are posted to Matabeleland South when they actually come from Chipinge. The person struggles with the local language and securing accommodation, let alone leaving their family behind. The next thing after their appointment, that person is seeking to be transferred. Therefore, we want to deal with this issue once and for all,” said Minister Moyo.

At the same event, Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Misheck Mugadza said teaching is a noble profession that deserves respect.
