Fugitive Peter Dube faces more charges

- Nyore Madzianike

FUGITIVE suspected killer Peter Dube, who is currently facing extradition from Mozambique, will face additional charges upon his return to Zimbabwe.

Dube is accused of murdering his second wife’s suspected lover Shelton Chinhango and her friend Gamuchirai Mudungwe in 2021.

He is also charged with attempting to kill his wife Nyasha Nharingo’s sister, Nyaradzo, after turning the gun on her during the incident.

He has been on the run ever since, evading the authorities until his arrest in Ireland and subsequent deportation to Mozambique.

It is believed that in addition to the murder and attempted murder charges he already faces, Dube could also be charged with violating immigration laws, among other infractions.

Dube is currently being held in Mozambique, while processes to facilitate his extradition are underway.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Mozambican authorities are “on the final lap” of completing legal processes to extradite Dube.

Said Asst Comm Nyathi: “There are final legal procedures that are being undertaken by Zimbabwean and Mozambican authorities.

“Once the procedures are cleared at any moment, he will be in the country.”

He said he was confident that the process was nearing completion.

“I cannot give specific dates on when he will be in the country, but the legal processes are at an advanced stage.

“He is currently in Mozambican authorities’ hands.

“He will be facing murder and attempted murder charges, plus any other charges that might arise from his conduct.”

Last month, Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga confirmed that processes to bring Dube to book had commenced.

“Through Interpol, we managed to bring back criminals who had run away from the country,” he said.

“I will give an example of one former police officer (Jaison Muvevi), who shot and killed people in Hwedza and crossed into Mozambique. Through our cooperation as the Interpol family, we managed to extradite him.

“That criminal was brought back. “Of late, we have one (Peter) Dube, who was deported from Ireland into Mozambique and . . . I hope he will be brought back into the country through our friendship with Interpol.”

Following the 2021 shooting incident, Dube fled the country to settle in Ireland under a false identity.

He was later arrested by Irish authorities before being convicted of violating the country’s immigration laws.

Dube was then deported to Mozambique after falsely claiming he was a citizen of the neighbouring country, who goes by the name of Armando Quenete Muchanga.
