HE started off as an ice cream vendor, but Mr Lincoln Masiyenyama (pictured) has risen to become one of the most enterprising businesspeople in the country today.

The 32-year-old entrepreneur is the man behind Nakiso Borehole Drilling, one of the companies powering the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme that has seen installation of thousands of boreholes countrywide to improve access to clean water in both rural and urban communities.

Mr Masiyenyama formed Nakiso only three years ago, but the company is making waves owing to its modern and professional services.

This year alone, he has scooped multiple awards of excellence. They include Outstanding Young CEO of the Year (Zimbabwe CEO’s Network Awards 2023), Young Entrepreneur Achievers Platinum winner (Entrepreneurs Network of Zimbabwe Awards 2023) and Social Impact Project of the Year (Chartered Institute of Project Managers Awards 2023).

He has several other accolades he won since 2021. In an interview with this publication, Mr Masiyenyama revealed that the beginning was not all rosy for him.

“I started off from humble beginnings, selling ice cream on the streets before becoming a cross-border trader at 19. At 22, I decided to migrate and become a driver, transporting vehicles from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.”

He said in 2020, he took a bold step to establish Nakiso Borehole Drilling and now the company employs over 80 people, after starting with a staff complement of just four.

Mr Masiyenyama said the secret behind his firm’s rapid growth has been the commitment to provide quality services.

“We do not only prioritise profit, but also strive to bring about positive change in people’s lives. Nakiso Borehole Drilling now provides top-notch machinery for reverse circulation, core drilling and blast hole drilling, cementing their presence in the industry.”

He said the Second Republic’s deliberate focus on promoting youth empowerment has been influential in the company’s journey.

“Many young individuals have been appointed to influential positions, bringing a vibrant perspective to their roles. Notable examples include Ministers Tino Machakaire, Kirsty Coventry, Tatenda Mavetera and Felix Mhona.

The Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme, in which we have participated, has provided substantial employment opportunities.

“Our collaboration with local communities has been essential in this endeavour. Additionally, the First Lady’s philanthropic work, particularly through our partnership with the Angel of Hope Foundation, has played a crucial role in our empowerment journey. Together, we have provided multiple boreholes to communities in need, improving access to clean water,” he said.

Mr Masiyenyama revealed that, in addition to the Presidential scheme, his company is also involved in several other major projects, including the Dzivaresekwa housing initiative, where over 200 000 low-cost houses and flats are currently under construction.

He said the firm is also involved in philanthropy as it has donated numerous boreholes to communities around the country.

The youthful entrepreneur revealed that his company is continuing to grow, as it is now venturing into the mining sector.

He said success does not come on a silver platter, and implored other young people to work hard.

“Our success at a young age can be attributed to various factors. Firstly, we acknowledge the role of God Almighty in guiding us. Secondly, our diligence and hard work have enabled us to overcome challenges along the way. Thirdly, we value the importance of building good relationships and have created strong networks to support our journey. Moreover, mentorship plays a crucial role in our growth, as we seek guidance from role models and spiritual mentors.”

He said his fast-growing company will continue to provide employment to diverse groups of people.

“We offer internships and on-the-job training to young individuals, providing them with valuable work experience. Gender equality is also a priority for us, as we employ girls and provide equal opportunities for them. We are proud to have employed youngsters with disabilities, demonstrating our commitment to inclusivity.”
