Going the extra mile

- Nicole Dyanda Nicole Dyanda is a Form Two learner at Wise Owl High School in Marondera. She aspires to become a lawyer.

GOING the extra mile is a habit embraced by many successful people in different fields. Our motto at Wise Owl High School is, “Going an Extra Mile”.

This is a habit we are encouraged to develop as we chase our educational goals. It is an important characteristic of high achievers in different spheres of life.

When you put an extra effort, have a positive attitude, enthusiasm and determination to achieve set goals, that is going an extra mile.

Giving everything you have at one moment in life might not be sufficient.

If you want to fly high, pushing your boundaries beyond the expected is the best option.

In academics, do your assignments as soon as you get them, work hard and hand them in before the due dates.

Do not settle for average marks in your subjects. Refuse to accept mediocrity in your performances. Work with determination to score 100 percent in everything. Aim for the moon; if you miss, you will land among the stars.

Do not just attend lessons, participate and show active engagement in class.

When others are sleeping, playing video games or chatting, study or work on an assignment. Going the extra mile involves the willingness to take on challenging tasks and a commitment to doing things with high level of excellence.

This is when you want to improve your skills and knowledge. Learners with this mentality use their time productively.

They end up smiling in the corridors of excellence.

The habit of going the extra mile is the difference between an average and a successful student. Going the extra mile is about choosing to take responsibility and stepping outside your comfort zone.

Nothing worth celebrating can come on a silver platter.

A sequence of modest, but persistent efforts lead to success.

There are so many examples of individuals in business, athletics, sport and art who have achieved excellence through this habit of going the extra mile.

Nothing feels better than getting a reward for doing the best.

I encourage you to use your time wisely at school and strive to push past everyone’s expectations.

Going the extra mile is a difficult thing, but you need to prove to yourself that you are capable. Show the world what you are made of.

Go the extra mile and be the best you can be. The sky is the limit.
