ON January 26, Mother Nature favoured us with fine weather, conducive for an athletics competition that took place at Chikondoma Stadium in Mutoko.

Munashe Private High School athletics teams were competing under their house names Tiger, Cheetah and Lion.

Each of them is under the leadership of a housemaster, assisted by a dedicated team of sports enthusiasts in the form of teaching staff members.

Prior to the big day, a lot had been going on behind the scenes.

In the afternoon, from Monday to Saturday, lessons were suspended as teams thronged the training ground for practice sessions.

Nimble-footed sprinters had no option but to showcase their talents as they raced towards the finishing line.

Under-20 boys battled it out in the long-distance race (10 000 metres), which proved to be a mammoth task for the majority of participants.

Lower Sixth learner Tanyaradzwa Kusangaya, who was representing Tiger, scooped the first prize after outpacing fellow contestants.

Tiger members burst out in jubilation for having one of their own romping to victory unchallenged.

For the girls, the longest distance challenge was for the 3 000-metre race, which was won by Nyasha Chikoore, affectionately known as “Maria Mutola”.

Cheetah members sang and danced, celebrating the first points bagged from the 3km race.

All houses fielded competitors in all the events. The fun-filled day came to an end in style with the teachers’ battle in the 100m dash, much to the amusement of learners.

Overall, Cheetah House came out on top after scooping most of the first prizes.

The objective of the competition was to come up with a team that will represent the school at the zonal competitions.
