Northern Region Women’s Football returns

THE Northern Region Women’s Soccer League (NRWSL) will return this month with a pre-season tournament at Ellis Robins School on April 13.

League matches will commence the following week.

“Northern Region Women Soccer League would like to notify its members and valued stakeholde­rs of the season opening tournament scheduled for Saturday April 13 at Ellis Robins High School.

“All clubs affiliated to the league will be expected to take part.

“The tournament comes as a predecesso­r of the 2024 league season which commences the following week. League fixtures will be released soon,”read a statement from the league on Friday.

The teams participat­ing in the pre-season tournament include Ngezi Queens, Black Rhinos Queens, Sodbury Spiders, Star Queens, Harare City Queens, Dynamos Queens, Cyclone Queens, Yadah Queens and University of Zimbabwe.

More importantl­y, the tournament will provide a blueprint for the NRWSL 2024 football season, which will see matches played at a centralise­d venue.

Ellis Robins School has provided five football pitches for the northern region this season, while other matches will be at the University of Zimbabwe.

This comes after Dzivarasek­wa Stadium, Harare High School grounds and Hippodrome Stadium, the homes of Harare Queens, Dynamos Queens and Sodbury Spiders, respective­ly, were deemed unfit to host matches.

Meanwhile, the league has welcomed the arrival of new administra­tor Orphah Ruzvidzo (38), who started work on April 1.

“Northern Region Women Soccer League is pleased to announce the appointmen­t of Orphah Ruzvidzo to the position of NRWSL administra­tor effective April 1, 2024.

“Ruzvidzo holds a BA Honours in Philosophy and Humanities, and a Master’s degree in Business Administra­tion.

“His roles will include the running of the administra­tive affairs of the league, that is, the log drafting, statistics, policy implementa­tion, handling of administra­tive duties and facilitati­ng periodic training for coaches and referees. We would like to wish the new administra­tor a successful tenure and hope that he serves the league to the best of his capabiliti­es,” went on the statement.

The new NRWSL administra­tor had a stint in teaching, where he was employed at St Paul’s Musami, St Peter’s Mbare and Kasisi Orphanage in Zambia.

While teaching in Musami, he ventured into coaching and earned a BA Honours in Philosophy and Humanities while at Arrupe College, and later attained a Master’s degree in Business Administra­tion from the Zimbabwe Open University (2017-2019).
