House of worship goes eco-friendly
IT appears churches are enthusiastically joining the green-up crusade.
A visit to the Reverend John Makaniko-led United Methodist Church in Chisipite, Harare, left me awe-struck.
The church is situated along ED Mnangagwa Road.
I managed to talk to Rev Makaniko, who explained that the inspiration to green up the environment is derived from the church’s Bishop, Eben Kanukayi Nhiwatiwa.
Bishop Nhiwatiwa is now affectionately known as the Green Bishop because of his love for planting trees and encouraging churches, especially under his jurisdiction, to green up their spaces.
The Chisipite church has managed to create an attractive green space right from the gate. As you enter, you are greeted by a small island that is neatly designed with a variety of plants which create a breathtaking scenery.
The well-pruned duranta shrubs leaves you in awe, while the neatly maintained lawn makes the whole place a lovely site.
Colourful bougainvillea line the edges, whilst palms give the landscape the right atmosphere for a church property.
Beyond the driveway, there are preparations to remodel the area. This is the section in front of the massive modern church building. In this space, the date palm (phoenix reclinata) displays its grandeur.
The place experiences high traffic volumes due to congregants who come for services.
The Chisipite circuit holds its services every Sunday morning.
Around the property are a number of trees growing majestically, providing shade to parked vehicles.
The administration hub of the church is also a place where you will find a neat garden.
Here, good landscaping practices by the church leaders are showcased.
This is also the place where a playground is situated for children’s recreational activities.
The green environment at this church demonstrates that beautifying places is not the preserve of companies or individuals alone; everyone should play a part.
