Don’t take freedom for granted

- Tendai Makope

INDEPENDENCE Day celebrations are around the corner. This is a special day that should be respected by every Zimbabwean irrespective of our political differences, race or tribe.

This year, Zimbabwe is celebrating 44 years since breaking the chains of colonialism.

Already, one can feel the vibe and anticipation ahead of the big day. Some will gather in Buhera for the national celebrations while others will commemorate the day in their respective districts and provinces around the country.

As we celebrate our independence, let us take a moment to remember that several gallant sons and daughters lost their lives to make April 18, Independence Day, a reality.

Most of us have read or heard stories about the courageous freedom fighters, the sacrifices they made, their resilience and unwavering dream of a free Zimbabwe.

Their sacrifices paved the way for us to chase our own dreams, to study and to one day pursue our preferred careers.

It is now upon us to safeguard our sovereignty and say no to neo-colonialism.

We should cherish the freedom we enjoy and never take it for granted.

Back in the day, things were tough. Textbooks give us a rough picture of how horrible the colonial era was. Segregation and limited opportunities, were the order of the day.

In conclusion, let us celebrate responsibly, cherishing the unity and peace that make Zimbabwe a beautiful country.
