What past presidents say about 50th anniversary
Letitia Gaga
I think for CGI, it’s a great milestone which we have achieved. We have contributed a lot to the economy in our country even globally.
We have seen that many of our members have migrated outside the country and are contributing s lot to those economies. Even here there are CGI people in most organisations.
When we started, I remember everyone wanted to do CIS even now we are trying to put that on map, I’m excited by the name change to include governance and accountancy which is a very powerful tool in terms of building our economy because we have the part of governance which guides us how to do things in our companies. If we combine those two we have integrity on how to do business and we put those issues first.
With this kind of qualification we will have strong institutions because we will have good ethical behavior in terms of working relationships.
At the end of the day we have a strong economy and a strong government at.
We also launched public sector accounting where we want to professionalise the public sector. It was an issue of lagging behind.
We are therefore looking at assisting them in having strong institutions and as a result they will contribute to the economic growth.
ey are taking it up and are participating. We also excited that we are pilot PAOs which were selected together with ICAZ even though we are not members of the federation they have taken us on board to professionalise the public sector which we have done.
I’m hoping this relationship will go on. When I was president we managed to work with the police where we launched a diploma in forensic accounting and they are excited and are bringing in more members .it’s changing the way of doing business and they are now equipped changing the way they do their investigations.
e commissioner of police vowed to add more people to be trained in more so that are equipped in how they do their investigations.
We are also collaborating with Zacc, training them in their areas of expertise.
is is exciting as we are working with the nation to make it a better place. If everyone have certain value at the end of the day we improve our economy.
Going beyond the 50 years we want to improve further and take a new dimension.
In terms of inclusiveness we have noticed that there are few women take up places even here in attended is just 290 % of women against our male counterparts.
at is why we have started the Wiga chapter to mentor young women in governance issues. ere is a lot which affect us as women but we want to venture into those arrears to say which problems are we facing preventing us to get into business.
We are going to partner with other organisations like PAFA top learn how they are doing it in Africa and many other organisations so we good things and implement them in our own country and encourage the girl-child to participate in the affairs of the country.
It has been tough but I’m excited and here we are.
Well-done to the premium and all the members .

As a past president, I was very impressed by the current crop of both secretariat and councillors who ushered the Institute into new waters after 50 years.
e corroboration with regional and international boards saw great changes to the curriculum and emphasis on Governance and Accounting.
To the Institute, I salute and wish members continued excellence in the fields of governance and Accounting.

e Institute’s 50th anniversary comes exactly after 19 years since I qualified and became a member. It is a very exciting and unique event as it coincides with the rebranding from ICSAZ to CGI Zimbabwe.
It is an event that remands us about the journey the Institute has travelled so far and remind us about our duty to protect the public interest, through qualifying Chartered Governance Professionals and Chartered Governance Professional Accountants of high integrity.
My journey towards the Institute’s qualification started in the late 1990s and I qualified in 2003.
e major deciding factor about the choice amongst the available Institutes or qualification was the Institute’s many and reasonable entry points that did not discriminate anyone who had the potential to qualify as a Chartered Governance Professional Accountant.
Unfortunately, there are still some entry requirements configurations to the accountancy profession that were designed to exclude certain people/persons entering the profession.
e Institute’s unique entry points is now being supported by many current researches that have found no positive co-relation between some of the entry requirements requested by some institutions to the performance of the individual either at work or in achieving a pass mark in the qualification.
e other major factor was the Institute’s bias towards competency-based qualification as opposed to academic emphasis.
I found the qualification beneficial as I was able to translate/apply the competencies acquired through my studies to most of my work requirements.
