Babylon by Hogg & Lamb
Located on the rooftop level of Westfield, Sydney, Babylon Rooftop Bar and Restaurant designed by Brisbanebased Hogg & Lamb recalls the splendour of an ancient city. Specializing in Middle Eastern cuisine, the restaurant features elegant dining rooms and hanging gardens. Within the twelve-hundred-square-metre tenancy, built elements are layered with ruin-like colonnades, arches and plinths, creating a labyrinthine landscape of intimate and communal dining areas.
Slatted timber ceilings, gold-beaded arches and opulent drapery enhance this rich and layered effect. These varied spaces recall the spatial qualities of a bazaar, inviting patrons to discover the different rooms over multiple return visits. The collection of rooms vary in scale and spatial quality. Travertine plinths, archways and colonnades form a series of interconnected spaces. The material palette references Babylon: terracotta, clay block, masonry, natural stone and lime render – all realized in collaboration with artisan renderers, bricklayers and stonemasons. These materials are complemented by solid timbers, metals, gold-beaded ceilings and soft fabrics. Historical references are juxtaposed with refined and luxurious finishes to enrich the patrons’ experience. Photography — Christopher Frederick Jones Hogg and Lamb — hoggandlamb.com
