Australian Institute of Music by Fender Katsalidis
Fender Katsalidis has completed the six-million-dollar refurbishment of the Australian Institute of Music’s Sydney campus. The renovation creates a unified campus, enabling staff and students from different departments to share access to auditoria, practice rooms, recording studios, lecture halls and student facilities, and fostering a sense of community among campus users. The project unites a number of existing buildings on the Foveaux Street, Surry Hills site, including a converted warehouse from the 1900s, a 1930s heritage brick structure and an infill building completed in 2015, also by Fender Katsalidis. A simple material palette complements existing built features and ensures consistency across the campus. Fender Katsalidis director Rob Mirams explains that the design “adds ‘place’ to the equation and can help generate a positive and creative learning experience around music, dance and management.” Photography — Anthony Fretwell Fender Katsalidis — fkaustralia.com
