Words from the editor
December 2020 — February 2021
Hospitality is a tough business, in every sense of the word. We knew that even before a global pandemic bore its brunt. It’s also an industry that is at the heart of our communities. The corner cafe, that pub with the great beer garden, and that lovely little restaurant the whole family agrees on – these are the spaces that make up the tapestry of our neighbourhoods and, indeed, our lives. And this year, when it was all taken away, we learnt the true meaning of “absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
Here in Melbourne, whose hospitality scene has been hardest hit, the ingenuity and nimbleness of owners and operators meant whole new business models were created and launched, seemingly overnight. Us diners could order pre-made cocktails to our doors, have fine dining degustations delivered, and join wine tastings over Zoom. But of course, it wasn’t the same. We yearned to sit in those spaces we loved and missed: to scooch into a booth with mates, or plonk ourselves at a bar and while away a few hours. Interiors are a big part of why we love eating and drinking out.
When the Eat Drink Design Awards jury met over video link to adjudicate in the midst of Melbourne’s stage four lockdown, we did so with a great sense of honour. Among all of the year’s struggles, we wanted the hospitality and design industries to celebrate their achievements. A quick scan of this year’s winning, commended and shortlisted venues makes it clear that there is much to salute, now more than ever. I applaud the talent and dedication of all those involved.
So, what can we do from here? It’s easy: eat out, drink out, as much as you can. Pick a venue (perhaps one from this year’s shortlist), grab some mates and go. Our hospitality friends will thank you for it.
Australia, your table is ready.
