Austin’s Wines by Matt Goodman
▲ With an extensive renovation, Matt Goodman Architecture Office has transformed a 50-year-old shearing shed outside Geelong into a dedicated cellar door for Austin’s Wines. The language of the existing shed drove all design decisions, with materials, new openings, joinery elements and minor additions all relating back to the character of the original structure.
Internally, the original steel portal structure is retained, propped and stiffened. Externally, a new roof was added over the existing, preserving the patina, which is still visible internally. The original corrugated cladding remains, with new corrugated linings added internally. This combination of “new meets old” gives the project an unpretentious quality.
The designer describes the project, which began in 2016 and finished in 2022, as a labour of love.
