Located in Ganzi prefecture, west of Sichuan province in China, Seda, or Serthar to local Tibetans, is home to more than 10,000 monks and nuns who stay in the red houses surroundin­g the Seda Monastery, the largest school for Tibetan Buddhism in the world. The number of monks and nuns can be as much as 40,000 during certain months of the year with up to four scholars sharing a room, staying up to three years. The area was briefly known for being ground zero of the Tibetan uprisings of March 2008.
