Songket Malaysia
A songket is a piece of fabric woven with cotton or silk with has three parts, namely the kepala (head), badan (body) and kaki (foot). An intricate supplementary weft technique is used to weave gold threads in between the longitudinal silk threads of the background cloth to create elaborate patterns. This rich and luxurious fabric demonstrated the social structure of the Malay elite. Men wear songket fashioned into a destar (head cloth) and women wear it as a sarung (traditonal skirt). Today, songlet is a popular choice for Malay wedding costumes and is often presented by the groomo to the bride a wedding gift.
