MANAGING CHRISTMAS WITH DIABETES
“If you are taking insulin or certain diabetes tablets, you may be at greater risk of an alcohol-related hypoglycaemia (hypo) at periods of high festivity,” says Dr Jorgensen. Hypos can occur while drinking alcohol and for many hours afterwards. An added factor is alcohol can reduce the ability to detect a hypo and may cause them to be more difficult to treat. For women with diabetes, one alcoholic drink a day is a recommended maximum, while for men it’s two.
“It’s important to ensure all scripts are up to date, protective footwear is worn (to cut the risk of foot injury) and that you have an updated sick day management plan established with your treating health team before the Christmas break in case of emergency,” says
Dr Jorgensen. ■
