Rejoicer Spiritual Sleaze
The dynamic second album from Israeli producer, Rejoicer. Real name, Yuvi Havkin, the Tel-Aviv based producer is known for his diverse compositions that splice together funk, jazz, hip-hop, ambient and breakbeat in addition to heading up the excellent Raw Tapes imprint. The follow up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Energy Dreams, Spiritual Sleaze finds Rejoicer in typically genre-defying mood. Drawing on elements of, but never striding fully into jazz, hip-hop, beatmaker, afrobeat, breakbeat, ambient and electronica, the album traverses genres and moods with ease. The dynamism of the album is amplified through its improvisational spirit. The whole record feels unpredictable and innovative. Whereas Energy Dreams felt lighter and more dreamy and amorphous, Spiritual Sleaze has an altogether grittier, dirtier undercurrent. The beats are grainy, shrouded in hazy textures and atmospheres. Jazzy keys and drifting melodies meander over laidback grooves, deep bass and an intricate patchwork of drums and synths. The result is a mesmerising record that fascinates with every turn. A highly creative producer who embraces the freedom to follow ideas naturally, Rejoicer is a rare talent who evolves with each release. Long may this continue.
