How to… set up Frequency Modulation
>
Pigments can apply four simultaneous audio rate modulation sources to any of its wavetables. All four destinations are governed by the same audio-rate modulator, with a tuning knob that operates in relative, absolute, or non-tracking Hertz modes. The first option is true Frequency Modulation, as originally discovered by John Chowning in 1967. While there are options for both linear and exponential FM types, linear is the more musical and approximates Chowning’s work. The only other parameter here is FM amount. The modulator tuning and waveform play a crucial role in the timbral output.
