1 The Sequential Circuits Pro-One has been described as the unsung hero of early Detroit techno, by all accounts a favourite of Juan Atkins and certainly capable of some suitably powerful basslines. Vintage originals fetch big bucks, but the cheaper alternative is u-he’s outstanding Repro plugin (which also does a fine imitation of the polyphonic Prophet-5).

2 If Drumazon crops up a lot in our genre guides it’s simply because the Roland TR-909 which it emulates is such a colossus of electronic music. With original 909s now worth a small fortune, it’s lucky we can turn to such an excellent emulation as Drumazon, which has long been an

FM favourite. There’s no better starting point than a good 909 kick when it comes to techno drums. Drumazon does a superb job.
