Coombe Yarra Valley
YARRA VALLEY
Coombe Yarra Valley is one of the region’s oldest family estates, and was once home to operatic icon Dame Nellie Melba. Tucked away behind an incredible 100-year-old cypress hedge, it includes a cellar door, restaurant and seven acres of gardens still owned and operated by Melba’s descendants. The estate’s 60 hectares of vineyards were established in 1998, on the site of Hubert de Castella’s original 1800s plantings. Chardonnay takes pride of place on the cooler, lower-lying vineyards, and on the opposite side of the Maroondah Highway, the warmer slopes of Mount Mary are predominately planted to red varieties pinot noir and shiraz.
