2021 BATTLES MARGARET RIVER CHARDONNAY

Fruit from the Burnside area in Margaret River. High solids, wild ferment, natural mlf, matured for 9 months on lees in French oak. The artwork on the wordless front labels (created by a single, achingly talented artist) changes every vintage, and they’re so beautiful as a collection that it is sad to throw them away. To the wine; this is pure and viscous. The flavour is palate staining, yet delicate – a feat in itself. Yellow peach, saline acidity, red apple skins, preserved lemons and white nectarine are packaged in a glassy, polished and crystalline casing of phenolics; the fruit and oak so seamlessly entwined as to be one. Superb. EL 13.3% alc.

When do you believe this wine will be at its peak for drinking?

This 2021 Margaret River chardonnay shows the structure, fruit intensity and oak integration to allow it to age for many years to come. With time, the wine will show more weight, complexity and unravel its unique single vineyard characteristics.
