2019 CELLARHANDS MALUNA VINEYARD SHIRAZ

- Nick Flanagan and Duane Roy

Among the finest young Hunter shiraz tasted in recent memory. Something has evolved at this address, or perhaps I have been sitting under a rock. All done right: fermented spontaneously, with 30% bunches added to the top of the vat. Impeccably extracted. Racked thrice to French puncheons (50% new). Only 1000L made. Despite the warmth of the vintage, this is mid weighted, savoury and dangerously digestible, even young. Sarsaparilla, sweet earth, red cherry, a garni of lavender, thyme and lilac edge across a balancing beam of impeccably wrought tannins, taut and long limbed. A beautiful wine for the ages. NG 13.5% alc.

When do you believe this wine will be at its peak for drinking?

Definitely one for the cellar. At least 15–20 years, if you can wait. High-end cork was chosen for the closure of this minimal intervention wine. With age, it will develop into an even more structured Hunter shiraz.
