2020 HASELGROVE AMBASSADOR SHIRAZ

- Alex Sherrah

Slightly more extracted than its single-vineyard brethren. Needed, to tame the teeming florals and blue-fruit persuasions. This is perhaps the juiciest, most succulent and contemporary of these top-tier iterations, and yet it is the most drinkable, detailed and restrained. Powerful and pulpy, sure. But there is a corset of necessary tannins without overt reduction. I’d like even more, but the mace and clove and tapenade soothe the long finish. The Col Cross is spicier and arguably, firmer. Yet it feels reductive and forced. This is very good if shiraz is your go-to. NG 14.5% alc.

What’s special about this wine, and when do you believe it will be at its peak for drinking?

Drinking beautifully now, but built for longevity, this wine is complex and dense with an elegant structure, and bright natural acidity. It is our passion project and proudly named after our ambassador, Les Burdett OAM, with proceeds from each bottle donated to Variety, The Children’s Charity.
